第一节  Text-Language Points

1. used to: 表示一个已经中断的习惯,或过去经常性的活动及方式。其否定式为used not (usedn’t) …;疑问式为used you / he / they /?;否定疑问式为usedn’t you / he / they? 或把它当作实意动词,借助do的过去时提问或否定:did not use to …;did you use to …;usedn’t you / he / they”。
I used to drink beer; now I drink wine.
I used to get up at 6:00 a.m. when I was in Korea.
Used you drink beer?
You used to drink beer, usedn’t you?

1) vt. 禁止
Offensive language is forbidden in the classroom.    教室里禁止脏话。
His health worsens rapidly and wife forbids him to smoke any more.    他的健康状况恶化,妻子禁止他再抽烟。
2) vt. 不准……
When the vagrant returned home, he was forbidden the house.    当这个流浪汉回家时,被拒之门外。
Before he was five, his mother forbad him alcohol.    五岁前母亲不允许他喝含酒精的饮料。
3) vi. 禁止;不准……
I would join the army, but my eyesight forbids.    我很想参军,但我的视力不允许。

The orphan gradually grew into an adult.    这位孤儿逐渐长成成人。
Gradually the standard of people's living has been improved.
4. the other sex: 那另一性,这里指的是女性。“the other”指两者之间除去其一剩下的那一个;“other”别的,其他的;“another”是指除去一个剩下的三者以上的任何一个;“the others”指除去一个单位之后其余所有的。
The old man has two sons, one married and the other in the university.    老人有两个儿子,一个结婚了,另一个在上大学。
There is no other possibility.    没别的可能。
Would you like another glass of wine?
I will wait until the others come back.
5. On 16th November 1971, a great decision was taken.: 1971年11月16日,一项重大的决议诞生了。

1) n. 决定;决议;裁决

The Chinese government has taken a great decision towards establishing stability.    中国政府采取重大决定发展稳定。
The public is pressing the Council to reach a decision on the income taxes.    公众给委员会施加压力在所得税上做出决议。
This is the decision of the Supreme Court.    这是最高法院的裁决。
2) n. 坚定;果敢
My father is a man of decision.

1) vt. 管理;支配
Husband is supposed to earn money while the wife to administrate money.    丈夫挣钱,妻子理财。
Who will administrate the department after the Minister retires.
2) vt. 实施;执行
A new Health and Safety agency will administrate new rules.    一个新的健康与安全机构将实施新规则。
It is the court that administrates laws.

1) vt. 攻克;征服
After a bitter defense, the city was conquered.
Mickey conquered his shyness through joining in the club.    米奇通过加入俱乐部克服他的害羞。
2) vi. 得胜;做征服者
All the soldiers vowed to fight and to conquer.    所有的战士都发誓要战斗、要取胜。
Despite all the difficulties, their love will conquer.    尽管困难重重,爱情终将取得胜利。

1) 授权;委托
The Chairman was ill, so I was authorized to announce this decision.    主席病了,我被授权宣布这个决定。
The young fellow is authorized to act for the Electronic Company.    这个年轻小伙被授权为这个电力公司行事。
2) 批准;核定
The two pronunciations for this word have been authorized by the dictionary.    这个字的两种发音是这个字典核准了的。
The housing project has been authorized by the government.    政府批准了这项房地产项目。
9. Several votes have been taken in “The House” to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members.:
在交易所里举行了几轮投票,以确定成员们是否愿意让女人加入。
